Product Details
This station activity is designed to allow students to explore the layers of the Earth! Students should already have a basic understanding of Earth's layers prior to this activity- it is used as reinforcement. These stations do NOT cover mantle convection, as I teach Earth's layers before we learn about plate tectonics.
Station activities included:
Station 1: Students will watch a video about how far we have dug into Earth's crust. You will need to provide a laptop with internet access.
Station 2: Students will label a diagram of Earth's chemical and physical layers.
Station 3: Students will do a demo showing how seismic waves get blocked in the core. You will need to provide a circular pie pan, a pipette or eyedropper, and a rock.
Station 4: Students will make observations of peridotite (a mantle rock) and basalt (a crustal rock). If you do not have samples, pictures have been provided.
Station 5: Students will play with oobleck and explain how it is similar to the asthenosphere, which acts as a solid and a liquid. You will need to make oobleck with cornstarch and water.
Station 6: Students will read about Earth's magnetic field.
Station 7: Students will analyze a graph of temperatures within Earth's layers.
Station 8: Students will examine a hard boiled egg and liken it to Earth's layers. If you do not want to prepare an egg, a picture has been provided.
