Looking for a new way for students to explore fossils? Try out this station lab! (Students should have a basic understanding of fossils prior to this lesson). This activity is low prep and great for blended learning. Computers are needed at two of the stations (see description below).

In this activity, students will rotate through 8 fossil stations:

Station 1: At this station students will classify 4 real fossils by type (if you don't have fossils, pictures have been provided).

Station 2: At this station students will explore virtual fossils. Computer access is required.

Station 3: At this station students will read an article about the La Brea Tar Pits.

Station 4: At this station students will assemble paper bones to form a fossil skeleton.

Station 5: At this station students will watch a video on transition fossils. Computer access with YouTube is required.

Station 6: At this station students will explain how fossils have helped prove the theory of plate tectonics and continental drift.

Station 7: At this station students will examine an outcrop diagram and decide which fossils make good index fossils.

Station 8: At this station students will assemble 6 fossil type puzzles.
